Following last week’s post, I guess I had the realisation both TV and music played a huge part in my life. So, thought I’d post my top 5 songs (and reasons why I feel they’re underrated)
Battlecry – Angel Haze ft Sia
Not that I’m one for rap music, nothing against it, it’s just not my thing. I was surprised my ears were once greeted by this track. Supported by Sia, Angel Haze, confronts her own experiences through her childhood. The story behind the song is heart-wrenching and the lyrics must only just begin to convey the emotion behind it. If you break down the lyrics of the song it just bursts with inspirational quotes.
Favourite lyric: You’re the only person alive that holds the key to your healing
Why: I’ve said all along, that everything I’ve been through in life (though it may be minimal to some) it’s only me that can ‘heal’ myself. Only I can control my own thought processes. No matter how many tablets or courses of therapy I’m put through – it’s me in control of what I do in the aftermath.
It’s Not Right For You – The Script
I’ve only made it to the second in my list, and I’ve mentioned The Script – my favourite band in the whole world. If you’ve not heard any of their music please do check them out. It’s Not Right for You features on the fourth album, No Sound Without Silence. I love this song because it’s motivational, if you don’t like something then change it.
Favourite lyric: It’s not too late to do something new
Why: If you want to make a change, don’t think that you can’t because you feel it’s too late. Personally even at 23, I feel I’m ‘past it’ for some stuff. Yeah, I know! But if you want to do something different, then go for it if you feel the time’s right and if it doesn’t then wait You’ll get there!
Vienna- Billy Joel
I was introduced to this song when it featured on 13 Going On 30. It was actually really difficult to pick a favourite line from this song. But I connect as I am forever thinking about 300 steps ahead, and don’t enjoy things for what they are. On the flipside to that, I feel overwhelmed at the most trivial of things and then let opportunities past me by.
Favourite lyric: You can get what you want or you can just get old
Why: I guess, I interpret this as life is for living, you’ve got to go out there and work for it to get what you want. Or…. You can let life pass you by, not have many stories / experiences to share and before you know it you’re old.
Live Your Life – Original Rude Boys
There’s quite a few ORB songs that have a strong message. But I think Live Your Life is the first one I really got feeling from. If I could have a tattoo, I would have the lyric ‘keep your feet on solid ground’ tattooed on my foot. But I have things thing about needles so…..
But my favourite lyric is: Have no regrets in this life you lead, aim high & succeed, give it all till the day that you leave.
Why: Following on from the last few songs, the strong message I take from this, is you have to live your life – have aspirations and make them a reality, take every opportunity that will allow you to grow mentally and physically.
Flying High and Falling Low – Walking On Cars
For me, the lyrics highlight about how you don’t need everything in the world, to be happy. You can find happiness in simple things, in each other. I suppose I’m looking from it in a terms of a relationship, and that sometimes you each need to make sacrifices / compromises and that’s what makes it healthy.
Favourite Lyric: Somedays I’m flying high, I’m falling low. Somedays I’m made of gold, I’m made of stone.
Why: It just shows that a person can be on top of the world one day, feeling unbreakable but it’s okay if you’re not always in that frame of mind, it’s okay to have ‘off’ days.
So there you have it – my top 5 songs that I feel are underrated. I probably haven’t done them justice, as trying to explain a connection was more difficult than I imagined. But give the a try if you’re looking for new music 😊
